Effects of acute and chronic arecoline in adult zebrafish: Anxiolytic-like activity, elevated brain monoamines and the potential role of microglia

Summary: Arecoline is a naturally occurring psychoactive alkaloid with effects on nicotinic and muscarinic receptors. Studies on zebrafish showed that acute and chronic arecoline treatments induced anxiolytic-like behavior, altered neurotransmitter levels, and activated specific genes related to brain function and immune response, suggesting potential for developing novel anxiolytic drugs based on arecoline-like molecules.
