Quantum confinement and size resolved modeling of electronic and optical properties of small soot particles

Kevin Wan et al.

Summary: This study modeled the electronic and optical properties of flame-generated carbon nanoparticles, analyzing the ionization energies and optical band gaps of particles of different sizes. It found a dependence of the refractive index on particle size, with the imaginary component being particularly sensitive. The role of resonance-stabilized radical chain reactions in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon growth: Theoretical calculation and kinetic modeling

Qian Mao et al.

Summary: Resonance-stabilized radical chain (RSRC) reactions have been proposed as alternative pathways for the formation and growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study investigated the growth of indene from a resonance-stabilized cyclopentadienyl radical through a series of RSRC sequences. The addition of acetylene to the above three resonance-stabilized C7H7 isomers forms indene, with benzyl having the highest formation rate constant and cycloheptatrienyl the lowest. The impacts of the investigated reactions on indene formation were explored in counterflow diffusion and laminar premixed flame configurations, with results showing marginal contributions from the RSRC pathways via C2H2 addition to vinylcyclopentadienyl and cycloheptatrienyl radicals.

Reactive localized sr-radicals on rim-based pentagonal rings: Properties and concentration in flames

Angiras Menon et al.

Summary: The impact of localized sr-radicals on soot formation was explored based on their electronic structure and relative concentrations in flame conditions. It was found that different temperatures favor different structures on rim-based pentagonal rings. Localized sr-radicals were more concentrated at lower temperatures but became negligible at higher temperatures.

Hydrophilic properties of soot particles exposed to OH radicals: A possible new mechanism involved in the contrail formation

Symphorien Grimonprez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of soot particles in the early stages of contrail formation, finding that exposure to OH radicals significantly enhances the activation of soot regardless of the presence of sulfur in the fuel. The possibility of soot oxidation by OH radicals promoting soot activation is explored, with findings suggesting a new potential route to explain ice particle formation in the atmosphere.

Effects of maturity and temperature on soot density and specific heat

Hope A. Michelsen

Summary: This paper analyzes measurements of density and specific heat for solid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), providing estimates of their dependence on C/H ratio and temperature for use in models of soot formation and chemical evolution. The results are also applicable to models of optical properties of soot particles at different temperatures. Comparisons show excellent agreement with measurements of mature soot particles and graphite.

Summary: This study determines the electronic band gap of flame-formed carbon nanoparticles for the first time using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, showing a clear size-dependency and matching results within experimental uncertainty with optical band gap measurements. Summary: This study utilized a Kinetic Monte Carlo model to simulate the growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in flames, focusing on the formation and distribution of five- and seven-member rings. The results showed that the formation of seven-member rings and the embedding of five-member rings is a competitive process, with the proportion of PAHs containing both types of rings increasing with PAH size.

Molecular content of nascent soot: Family characterization using two-step laser desorption laser ionization mass spectrometry

Hassan Sabbah et al.

Summary: The molecular composition of nascent soot particles was analyzed using mass spectrometry, showing a significant evolution from nucleation to growth stages. Samples collected from different locations along the flame axis revealed an increase in carbon clusters, including fullerenes, with longer residence time in the flame. This study suggests that large PAHs with pentagonal rings efficiently evolve into fullerenes through dehydrogenation and isomerization processes during early stages of soot growth.

Federica Ferraro et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the impact of oxymethylene ether-3 (OME3) blended with ethylene on carbon particulate formation, indicating a reduction in total number and size of soot particles at various equivalence ratios, with little change in the number of small nanoparticles. The results suggest that OME3 addition may contribute to reducing carbon particulate matter emissions while maintaining the number of small nanoparticles.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial evolution of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) and their formation pathways in a flame using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations.
