Explosion at an aluminum factory caused by the July 2018 Japan floods: Investigation of damages and evacuation activities

Yuko Araki et al.

Summary: An explosion at an aluminum factory in Soja City, Okayama Prefecture, caused damage to nearby structures and homes, leading to the evacuation of residents. Residents in the area had conducted voluntary disaster prevention activities before the incident, and were able to safely evacuate with the help of disaster prevention organizations and local government agencies afterwards. The study pointed out a lack of information sharing on chemical accident hazards between the factory, local government authorities, and residents, emphasizing the need for better mechanisms for information sharing in preparation for technological accidents like Natechs.

A comprehensive analysis of the occurrence of Natech events in the process industry

Federica Ricci et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of 9100 past accidents over the last 70 years, revealing trends, geographical distribution, triggers, and consequences of Natech events. Meteorological events were found to be the main trigger of Natech scenarios, with an increasing number of occurrences observed over time.

Climate change and NaTech events: A step towards local-scale awareness and preparedness

Eleonora Pilone et al.

Summary: This study examines the awareness and preparedness of urban and local planners to cope with NaTech risk, as well as the availability of dedicated tools. It highlights the lack of dedicated NaTech planning actions and tools despite the expected increase in NaTech risk due to climate change. Based on the analysis, a 'NaTech tool' was developed for local planners to use practical and easy methods in the absence of sectorial experts.
