Human and ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in different particle sizes of road dust in Muscat, Oman

Hilal K. Al-Shidi et al.

Summary: The study investigated heavy metal contamination in road dust in Muscat, Oman, with Cu having the highest level among the analyzed metals. Most metals had higher concentrations in finer fractions, and the risk levels varied from strong to very strong potential. Ingestion was found to be the main exposure pathway for children and adults, with finer particles posing higher non-carcinogenic risks, especially for Cr, Pb, and Cu.

Application of micro-morphology in the physical characterization of urban road dust

Jithin Jose et al.

Summary: The study analyzed urban road dust from Vellore City, India, and found that particles were categorized into spherical, mineral, elongated, and irregular classes, with mineral particles making up the largest portion. Spherical particles were mainly from combustion sources, mineral particles were largely of crustal origin, and irregular particles were primarily sourced from biological debris.

Contamination, sources and health risk of heavy metals in soil and dust from different functional areas in an industrial city of Panzhihua City, Southwest China

Summary: The study found that contamination of vanadium and chromium in the vanadium/steel plant (VsA) and cadmium, lead, and zinc in the iron-ore smelting (IsA) were significantly higher relative to other functional areas. The contaminated heavy metals in the soil and dust mainly came from smelting and manufacturing vanadium/steel products, coal combustion and traffic.

Adaptation of the Young Adults' Cigarette Dependence (YACD) Scale for the development and validation of the Adolescent Cigarette Dependence Scale (ACDS)

Souheil Hallit et al.

Summary: A new Adolescent Cigarette Dependence Scale (ACDS) was developed and validated among Lebanese adolescents, showing significant associations between cumulative smoking, nicotine dependence, and symptoms of dependence. Higher ACDS scores were linked to higher HONC scores, with factors like parental status and cumulative smoking influencing dependence levels. Further studies are needed to enhance the tool for assessing cigarette dependence in this population.

Assessment of personal exposure to environmentally persistent free radicals in airborne particulate matter

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: The study assessed daily exposure levels of EPFRs for urban residents in Beijing, finding that carbon-centered radicals dominated in winter, while oxygen-centered radicals dominated in summer. Coal combustion in winter was identified as a key influencing factor, and an intuitive assessment concluded that one urban resident may inhale the equivalent of 46 cigarettes per day in EPFRs. Further research on the health risks of these free radicals, especially during winter, is recommended.

Pollution characteristics and source identification of soil metal(loid)s at an abandoned arsenic-containing mine, China

Hongzhen Ran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sources and spatial distribution of metal(loid)s in soil at an abandoned arsenic mine site, revealing that arsenic, mercury, and antimony were the main pollutants from mining activities. Different metals had different sources, with mining activities being a significant source for arsenic, mercury, and antimony.

Understanding the fate and control of road dust-associated microplastics in stormwater

Sirajum Monira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sources, removal methods, and technical challenges of microplastic pollution in the water environment. It is found that constructed wetlands have limited effectiveness in removing MPs, leading to untreated stormwater releasing significant amounts of MPs into open water bodies. Future opportunities include the installation of membrane- or flotation-based technologies in the outlet of constructed wetlands for enhanced removal efficiency of MPs.

Spatio-temporal distribution and source identification of heavy metals in particle size fractions of road dust from a typical industrial district

Xi Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that the <45 µm particles in road dust are more impacted by pollutants in winter, while the 63-150 µm particles are more affected in summer. Heavy metals are mainly enriched in <45 µm particles in winter and in 63-150 µm particles in summer. Industrial sources are the main contributors of Zn, Cd, and Pb. It is recommended to strengthen the control of emissions from coal-fired enterprises in winter and prioritize industrial emissions of <45 µm particles.
