Estimating Benthic Light Regimes Improves Predictions of Primary Production and constrains Light-Use Efficiency in Streams and Rivers

Lily Kirk et al.

Summary: This study found that quantifying benthic light rigorously has a significant impact on GPP predictions and can constrain variations in LUE across different sites. By considering mean-light conditions, the ecosystem's light-capture ability can be quantified more effectively, which improves predictions of GPP.

A seasonally dynamic model of light at the stream surface

Philip Savoy et al.

Summary: Light plays a crucial role in stream ecosystems, influenced by topography, channel characteristics, and riparian vegetation. The structure and phenology of riparian vegetation are important factors affecting seasonal light availability. Existing models do not account for seasonal dynamics of canopies.

The Metabolic Regimes at the Scale of an Entire Stream Network Unveiled Through Sensor Data and Machine Learning

Pier Luigi Segatto et al.

Summary: Through combining Random Forest with sensor data time series, we successfully predicted the metabolic patterns of 292 individual stream reaches in the entire watershed and revealed the characteristics of the network they form. We found that the network-wide metabolism is mainly heterotrophic, with a clear peak of autotrophy in spring. Furthermore, we also discovered large terrestrial subsidies fueling ecosystem respiration.

Predicting Light Regime Controls on Primary Productivity Across CONUS River Networks

Phil Savoy et al.

Summary: The study found that water column processes limited productivity in 50% of the nation's river length and 80% of its surface area, with variations across ecoregions related to riparian forest cover. These findings facilitate large-scale predictions of stream and river ecosystem productivity and understanding of the processes controlling productivity across networks.
