Integrated crop-livestock systems: A sustainable land-use alternative for food production in the Brazilian Cerrado and Amazon

Julio Cesar dos Reis et al.

Summary: The study found that Brazil faces challenges in food supply and rational use of environmental resources, with the integrated crop-livestock system showing balanced economic and environmental performance, while the continuous crop system performs poorly in environmental aspects but has the highest profitability. The livestock system performs poorly in both economic and environmental outcomes.

Assessing smallholder sustainable intensification in the Ethiopian highlands

James Hammond et al.

Summary: Sustainable intensification is a method to increase food production without compromising sustainability goals. This study developed a data analysis approach for a multi-variate assessment of sustainable intensification, quantifying indicators in agricultural production, economics, environment, human welfare, and social domains. Results in Ethiopia showed that increased production intensity was correlated with higher scores in economic, social, and agricultural domains, indicating that productivity improvements can coexist with other sustainability domains.

Where does your guacamole come from? Detecting deforestation associated with the export of avocados from Mexico to the United States

Kimin Cho et al.

Summary: The United States imports 87% of its avocados from Michoacan, Mexico, but due to complex and opaque supply chains, American consumers and retailers struggle to recognize the environmental and social costs associated with avocado production. Research shows that avocado plantations in Michoacan are linked to deforestation, yet industry associates do not view avocado production as a driver of deforestation in the region.

Does agricultural trade reduce pressure on land ecosystems? Decomposing drivers of the embodied human appropriation of net primary production

Nicolas Roux et al.

Summary: Agriculture significantly impacts ecosystems, particularly deforestation and changes in terrestrial ecosystems. International trade is believed to reduce pressure on land ecosystems through optimizing the origin of agricultural products, but recent research suggests that changes in the origin of agricultural products have actually increased the impact on net primary production of vegetation.

On the role of social equity in payments for ecosystem services in Latin America: A practitioner perspective

Bosco Lliso et al.

Summary: The focus on social equity in the design and implementation of PES may contribute to the success of achieving social-environmental goals, according to a survey of PES practitioners in Latin American countries. This suggests that concerns for social equity are not only advocated from a normative stance, but also for instrumental reasons in enhancing PES success.

Biodiversity and the challenge of pluralism

Unai Pascual et al.

Summary: The lack of progress in reversing the declining global trend in biodiversity is partly due to a mismatch in how living nature is conceived and valued, leading to hindrances in protecting biodiversity. Addressing this problem calls for a pluralistic perspective on biodiversity, considering the use of the concept, willingness to expand its ambit, and engagement with various drivers of change.

The role of Indigenous peoples and local communities in effective and equitable conservation

Neil M. Dawson et al.

Summary: The involvement of Indigenous peoples and local communities plays a crucial role in achieving positive outcomes in conservation efforts. Externally controlled conservation tends to be ineffective, while locally controlled efforts are more successful. Emphasizing governance type and quality, as well as reinforcing the role, capacity, and rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities, can lead to more effective conservation outcomes.

The global divide in data-driven farming

Zia Mehrabi et al.

Summary: Access to big data and mobile technology is limited for small-scale farmers globally, particularly in developing countries where many farmers are unable to access these technologies. It is recommended that governments, development communities, and the private sector focus their efforts on promoting a digital inclusion agenda to provide all farmers with the opportunity for data-driven agriculture.

Land-use intensity mediates ecosystem service tradeoffs across regional social-ecological systems

Jiangxiao Qiu et al.

Summary: This study synthesized datasets from four social-ecological systems to examine the impact of land-use intensity on ecosystem service tradeoffs. Findings showed that as land-use intensity increases, the magnitude of tradeoffs between ecosystem services also increases. Moreover, land-use intensity alters the intersection points of provisioning and regulating services along the landscape composition gradient.
