Tribological behavior of chrome-deposited SAE9254 grade steel top compression piston ring under lubrication starvation and mild extreme pressure lubrication

Summary: This article discusses the tribological studies of piston ring/cylinder liner tribo-contact under dry sliding conditions and the potential minimization of scuffing failure with mild extreme pressure lubrication. The study found that extreme pressure lubrication can improve scuffing resistance and optimize coating materials for superior tribological characteristics. Superior lubricity, scuffing resistance, and enhanced load-bearing capacity were observed with EP-PAO10 blend lubrication compared to dry sliding-induced surface deteriorations and scuffing failure.
