Advances in optical phenotyping of cereal crops

Dawei Sun et al.

Summary: Optical sensors and sensing-based phenotyping techniques are widely used in crop breeding to improve trait selection and genetic gains. This article reviews the recent progress and applications of optical sensing-based phenotyping in cereal crops, focusing on the principles and specifications of optical sensing. The phenotypic traits determined by optical sensing are categorized into four groups, and appropriate sensors are suggested for each category. The challenges and possible solutions of optical sensing-based phenotyping are discussed, and the need for further exploration of this technology and establishing standardization and collaboration in phenotyping research is proposed.

Modeling of winter wheat fAPAR by integrating Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle-based optical, structural and thermal measurement

Zhengang Lv et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effectiveness of optical, structural, and thermal features in modeling winter wheat fAPAR using multisource remote sensing data fusion. Results show that multi-source data fusion integrating optical, structural, and thermal features provides the best model for winter wheat fAPAR mapping, with RGB imagery-derived optical and structural features playing important roles in modeling fAPAR. The thermal feature alone performs the worst among all experiments, but can complement other types of remote sensing features within the framework of data fusion to improve modeling accuracy.

Improved Estimation of Winter Wheat Aboveground Biomass Using Multiscale Textures Extracted from UAV-Based Digital Images and Hyperspectral Feature Analysis

Yuanyuan Fu et al.

Summary: High-definition digital images acquired by a low-flying unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and ground-based hyperspectral data were utilized to improve winter wheat biomass estimation. A multiscale texture extraction method and narrowband normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVIs) were applied for spectral feature extraction. The prediction accuracy was significantly improved by incorporating multiscale textures and SpeCR, with SpeCR performing better than NDVI for winter wheat biomass estimation.

An improved approach to estimate above-ground volume and biomass of desert shrub communities based on UAV RGB images

Peng Mao et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved approach for extracting three types of feature metrics simultaneously using UAV RGB images in a typical desert shrub area in Inner Mongolia, China was developed. The contribution of structural, textural, and spectral metrics to shrub AGV models was determined to be 86.68, 7.08, and 6.24% respectively in the proposed model. The results also showed that canopy volume played the most essential role in AGV modelling.

Wheat Yield Prediction Based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles-Collected Red-Green-Blue Imagery

Linglin Zeng et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of UAV-collected RGB images in predicting winter wheat yield by comparing them to various other observations. The results show that color indices derived from RGB images have high correlation with grain yield, outperforming measurements like canopy temperature and ground-observed chlorophyll content. Additionally, color indices provide better yield prediction compared to leaf area index under different nitrogen fertilization levels, highlighting their capabilities in wheat yield prediction across genotypes.
