Deformation characteristics, kinematic analysis, and formation ages of gneissose Palala granite in the Palala Shear Zone, southern boundary of the Central Zone, Limpopo Belt, South Africa

Chenyue Liang et al.

Summary: The Palala Shear Zone is a vertical, crustal-scale lineament in the Southern African Limpopo Belt. The Palala granite is similar in age and rock origin to the Nebo Granite, with deformation patterns indicating a high-medium temperature regime. The ductile deformation occurred after the emplacement of the Palala Granite at 2.05 Ga, under upper greenschist to low amphibolite facies conditions.

Integrated garnet and zircon petrochronology reveals the timing and duration of orogenic events in the North China Craton

Kai-Yang Du et al.

Summary: This study presents an approach combining direct dating of garnet with accessory zircon petrochronology to provide diagnostic time constraints for polymetamorphic processes in high-temperature rocks. The rocks in North China Craton are found to have experienced coeval metamorphism from approximately 1.95-1.80 billion years ago, which is likely related to the amalgamation of the Columbia supercontinent.

Time will tell: Secular change in metamorphic timescales and the tectonic implications

Priyadarshi Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The evolution of metamorphic rocks in terms of pressure, temperature, and time is directly tied to geodynamics, with different tectonic settings showing variations in their thermal architecture. The association between P-T paths and thermobaric ratios of metamorphic rocks is commonly used to distinguish different tectonic domains. However, the significance of metamorphic timescales in constraining tectonic settings is often overlooked. The relationship between the thermal regime, rheology, and rates of motion controlled by heat, mass, and momentum conservation laws results in differences in heating, cooling, burial, exhumation rates of metamorphic rocks, ultimately influencing the duration of metamorphism.
