Numerical and experimental investigations of instability in a spouted bed with non-spherical particles

Tianyu Wang et al.

Summary: The instability of a spouted bed containing non-spherical particles was investigated both numerically and experimentally. Conditions that created an S-shaped gas channel in the center of the bed proved the instability of non-spherical particles. The study also revealed that the granular temperature distribution of the particles and bubbles was associated with the gas channel region.

Gas-solid mixing and heat transfer performance in alternating spout deflection

Yuanhe Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, the alternating spout deflection (ASD) is compared with the spout-fluidisation (SF) flow pattern in terms of gas-solid hydrodynamics, mixing, and heat transfer performance using a Computer Fluid Dynamic-Discrete Element Method (CFDDEM) model. The ASD shows advantages in terms of particle packing state, mixing performance, and heat transfer efficiency compared to SF.

Exploring mechanism of spout deflection in a spout fluidized bed

Yuanhe Yue et al.

Summary: Two hypotheses were proposed to explain spout deflection mechanisms in spout fluidized beds, and virtual experiments were designed to verify these hypotheses. The study found that asymmetrical particle fountaining and rheological properties of the annulus region play key roles in determining spout deflection.

Direct numerical simulation of incompressible multiphase flow with vaporization using moving particle semi-implicit method

Xiaoxing Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method is developed for simulating multiphase incompressible flows with mass transfer due to vaporization. The method considers variable particle volume and introduces particle splitting technique to avoid large volume difference among particles. A source term for mass transfer rate in vaporization process is developed in the pressure Poisson equation (PPE) along with enhanced MPS schemes from previous studies.

CFD-DEM modelling of the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed

Zhouzun Xie et al.

Summary: In this work, a smoothed volume distribution model (SVDM) was developed to simulate the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed based on the unresolved CFD-DEM framework. The SVDM method allows a high-resolution mesh and can achieve a high efficiency and applicability compared to the DPVM method. The effects of inlet fine concentration and solid/fine size ratio on fines migration behavior were also studied, revealing insights into fine powder holdup and migration mechanisms.

Coarse-grained CFD-DEM simulation to determine the multiscale characteristics of the air dense medium fluidized bed

Ying Jia et al.

Summary: This study utilized a coarse-grained CFD-DEM method to analyze the bed expansion rates and solid concentration in ADMFB, and evaluated the microscale and mesoscale behaviors of ADMFB through power spectrum density and wavelet decomposition. The research found that pressure fluctuation mainly resulted from bubbles motion of mesoscale rather than from particles motion of microscale and global bed expansion of macroscale.

Particle-scale modelling of raceway dynamics in a blast furnace using a smoothing method

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a smoothing method to effectively simulate the lateral high-speed gas injection into a packed bed, forming a raceway cavity under high Reynolds number gas flow and narrow orifice conditions. The method successfully captures a plume-like raceway and proposes the boundary and volume of the cavity as two criteria for quantitatively assessing the raceway profile.

Simulations of biomass pyrolysis using glued-sphere CFD-DEM with 3-D intra-particle models

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: This research utilized a glued-sphere computational fluid dynamic discrete element method to investigate the effects of biomass particle shapes and sizes on pyrolysis. The study revealed significant influences of surface areas and mass distributions on interphase heat transfer and chemical reactions, with neglectable intra-particle heat transfer for certain conditions. Different reactor types were simulated to analyze conversion distributions, showing the best balance between uniform and fast conversion in the fluidized bed.
