Autogenous shrinkage and nano-mechanical properties of UHPC containing waste brick powder derived from construction and demolition waste

Zhi-hai He et al.

Summary: The research suggests that using an appropriate amount of recycled brick powder (RBP) as a replacement for silica fume can enhance the mechanical strength and reduce autogenous shrinkage in ultra-high performance concrete. Additionally, it improves the microstructure and performance of the concrete mixture.

Experimental study on full-volume slag alkali-activated mortars: Air-cooled blast furnace slag versus machine-made sand as fine aggregates

Jinyan Shi et al.

Summary: The study showed that as the substitution rate of ACBFS increased, the flowability and mechanical properties of FSAM significantly improved. Furthermore, the addition of ACBFS also helped enhance the compactness of the mortar's microstructure, thus improving the impermeability of FSAM. Additionally, specimens mixed with ACBFS exhibited good high temperature resistance due to the porous feature of the aggregate.

Environmental implications of the use of bio-cement treated recycled aggregate in concrete

Abhijit Mistri et al.

Summary: The use of bacterial cement and conventional cement slurry coating treatment on recycled coarse aggregates helps overcome shortcomings such as excessive water absorption, weak interfacial transition zone, and high porosity. Concrete with microbial carbonate precipitation (MCP) treated aggregate performs better than untreated recycled aggregate based concrete mixes, but marginally higher environmental impacts were observed due to additional emissions associated with the biocement treatment of RCA. Further environmental mitigation strategies are being considered to improve the environmental performance of concrete with MCP treated aggregates.

Mechanical properties of low-carbon ultrahigh-performance concrete with ceramic tile waste powder

Kaicheng Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, ceramic tile waste powder was used to prepare whole-life low-carbon ultrahigh-performance concrete, which showed excellent mechanical properties with compressive and flexural strength exceeding 120 MPa and 14 MPa, respectively. The modification mechanism mainly included pozzolanic effect, nucleation effect, and filling effect, improving the hydration degree of cement and reducing the porosity of concrete. The addition of CTWP also resulted in reduced environmental impacts and costs, making it a promising option for low-carbon concrete.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to obtain the cementitious fraction and cleaner fine aggregate from concrete through mechanical comminution and high-intensity magnetic separation. The results show that the proposed method effectively separates the main concrete constituents, especially when the waste material is reduced to the size range of 150-500 μm.
