Application of Immobilized Laccase on Polyurethane Foam for Ex-Situ Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Bioremediation

Brayam Luiz Batista Perini et al.

Summary: The immobilization of laccase on polyurethane foam shows promising potential for the bioremediation of hazardous Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), significantly improving removal efficiencies of various PAHs and generating identifiable biodegradation products. This approach achieved successful treatment within the intervention limits of environmental protection policies, indicating its potential as an ex-situ treatment method for PAHs bioremediation.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon accumulation in aged and unaged polyurethane microplastics in contaminated soil

Tereza Cerna et al.

Summary: The study found that biodegradable polyurethane microplastics exhibited strong accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil over time, while conventional polyurethane microplastics showed lower sorption capacity for PAHs and did not change their sorption behavior after aging.

Engineering adipic acid metabolism in Pseudomonas putida

Yannic S. Ackermann et al.

Summary: Bio-upcycling of plastics is an emerging alternative approach for valorizing polymer waste streams. This study demonstrated the successful integration of dca genes from Acinetobacter baylyi into Pseudomonas putida KT2440, enabling efficient metabolism of medium-chain-length dicarboxylates. Through adaptive laboratory evolution, the engineered strain was able to grow on adipate as a sole carbon source, showing potential for the upcycling of mixtures of polymers into biodegradable counterparts.

Open-Cell Aliphatic Polyurethane Foams with High Content of Polysaccharides: Structure, Degradation, and Ecotoxicity

Katerina Sklenickova et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of starch and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose additives on the structure, properties, ecotoxicity, and degradation of fully aliphatic polyester-ether polyurethane foams. The addition of starch and HEC resulted in tougher foam with slightly increased open-cell content but coarser cellular structure, larger cell sizes, and reduced water absorption. Biodegradation by bacteria was similar for all tested foams, while fungus biodegradation was more efficient in starch and HEC-modified foams, which also exhibited higher ecotoxicity for higher organisms.
