The life of a plastic butter tub in riverine environments*

Astrid E. Delorme et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution in the world's oceans poses a major environmental challenge, with rivers recognized as a key source of land-based plastic waste entering the seas. This study introduces a novel concept of tracking the aging process of plastic waste in river systems to better understand sources, hot-spots, and degradation processes of plastic pollution. The research shows that the degree of aging of plastic waste in rivers is influenced by proximity to the main river channel, exposure to natural conditions, and storage time on land.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of a municipal WWTP in removing microplastics using different sampling and detection methods. Results showed that the majority of microplastics were removed by the secondary treatment stage, and seasonal variations can affect the concentration of microplastics in effluents.
