Synergy of Advanced Experimental and Modeling Tools to Underpin the Synthesis of Static Step-Growth-Based Networks Involving Polymeric Precursor Building Blocks

Lies De Keer et al.

Summary: The combination of experimental design and advanced kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) modeling is effective in understanding step-growth network synthesis starting from linear/star polymeric precursor, where chemical and diffusion parameters play key roles. Validation of the model using experimental data and analysis of results from kMC modeling provide crucial insights into the network synthesis process.

Translating Simulated Chain Length and Molar Mass Distributions in Chain-Growth Polymerization for Experimental Comparison and Mechanistic Insight

Yoshi W. Marien et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of molar mass distribution (MMD) and chain length distribution (CLD) in polymerization processes, highlighting how different representations can be translated into each other and the potential biases from interchangeably using these representations. Case studies with increasing complexity in polymer products are used to illustrate the relevance of different CLD/MMD representations, providing guidelines for future studies to improve reliability in reporting.

Conformational Variations for Surface-Initiated Reversible Deactivation Radical Polymerization: From Flat to Curved Nanoparticle Surfaces

Francisco J. Arraez et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of reaction conditions on the molecular properties of synthesized tethered chains using a matrix-based kinetic Monte Carlo model in the surface-initiated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (SI-RDRP) system. The results indicate that surface confinement effects lead to the formation of heterogeneous polymer layers with bimodal characteristics.

High-Sensitivity Microcalorimetry and Gel Permeation Chromatography in Tandem Reveal the Complexity of the Synthesis of Poly-(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) Stars

Jean-Richard et al.

Summary: Two different approaches, coupling-onto (CO) and core-first (CF), were used to prepare a series of star poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazolines) (S-PIPOZ). High-sensitivity microcalorimetry analyses (HS-DSC) were shown to be powerful tools in combination with commonly used analytical techniques for refinement and elucidation of the microstructure of architecturally complex thermosensitive polymers such as star polymers. The results highlighted a discrepancy in synthesis completeness between the core-first and coupling-onto approaches, with the latter showing better correlation and consistency in the results.

Computational prediction of the molecular configuration of three-dimensional network polymers

Lies De Keer et al.

Summary: This study presents an approach combining kinetic Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations to predict the chemical and physical interactions between building blocks during the formation of three-dimensional networks. By controlling the real-time incorporation of each building block and functional group, the macroscopic properties of the material can be regulated, leading to the successful synthesis of tailored properties and functions in network polymers.

Mariya Edeleva et al.

Summary: The radical chemistry of polyacrylate synthesis is complex due to various side reactions which affect the polymerization rate and chain length distribution. Studies suggest that under specific conditions, beta-scission and chain transfer to polymer are the dominant side reaction pathways.

Coupled matrix kinetic Monte Carlo simulations applied for advanced understanding of polymer grafting kinetics

Freddy L. Figueira et al.

Summary: This study introduces a coupled matrix-based Monte Carlo concept to successfully model the polymerization kinetics, focusing on the detailed molecular build-up of grafted/crosslinked polymers. By limiting the single phase grafting of polybutadiene with styrene, the research explores different grafting scenarios and chain length distributions. The CMMC tool allows for the simulation of molecular contributions that are difficult to access experimentally, potentially leading to novel structure-property relationships.
