Introduction to and spread of COVID-19-like illness in care homes in Norfolk, UK

Summary: The study found that the number of non-care workers in care homes had the strongest relationship with the introduction of suspected SARS-CoV-2 cases. Higher staff levels and more severe PPE shortages were associated with higher case counts during the monitoring period. Mapping community-level determinants of COVID-19 transmission in nursing homes: A multi-scale approach

Summary: This study used spatial modeling to find that certain regions in the US had significantly higher COVID-19 cases and deaths among nursing home residents. Risk factors at the nursing home level included total count of fines, total staffing levels, and LPN staffing levels. County-level or place-based factors such as per-capita income, average household size, population density, and minority composition were significant predictors of COVID-19 cases in nursing homes.

Compress the curve: a cross-sectional study of variations in COVID-19 infections across California nursing homes

Clinical features and medical care factors associated with mortality in French nursing homes during the COVID-19 outbreak

Predictors of infection, symptoms development, and mortality in people with SARS-CoV-2 living in retirement nursing homes

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in retirement nursing homes, predictors of developing symptoms and death. Factors such as mental disorders, malignancies, and angiotensin II receptor blockers were associated with higher infection risk, while having a neurological syndrome was linked to a lower risk. Only half of infected individuals developed symptoms and certain conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and neurological syndrome increased the risk of symptom development. Male gender, hypokinetic disease, fever, and dyspnea were significant factors associated with 30-day mortality, while patient autonomy and early heparin treatment were linked to lower mortality risk.

Clinical characteristics of COVID-19 in older adults. A retrospective study in long-term nursing homes in Catalonia

Aligning SARS-CoV-2 indicators via an epidemic model: application to hospital admissions and RNA detection in sewage sludge

Researchers have found that SARS-CoV-2 RNA can be detected in municipal sewage sludge, providing an earlier signal of infection than hospital admissions data. A model was developed to estimate the incidence of infection and the transmission dynamics translated into infection indicators, showing that 89% of the population may have been removed from the risk of infection with the remaining 11% exposed to an outbreak that infected 9.3% of the total population.
