A clue to invasion success: genetic diversity quickly rebounds after introduction bottlenecks

Peter Kanuch et al.

Summary: The study on the bush-cricket Metrioptera roeselii found that establishment success in introductions is correlated with propagule size and introduction time. Larger propagule introductions had higher success rates, but genetic diversity was only partly correlated with propagule size. Over time, introduced populations became more similar to their founder populations, with differentiation in small propagule introductions disappearing.

Snake scales record environmental metal(loid) contamination

D. C. Lettoof et al.

Summary: Wetland snakes are recognized as bioindicators of contamination, with scales being used to quantify metal concentrations, showing accumulation from environmental exposure. LA-ICP-MS is a valuable tool for this non-lethal assessment of environmental contamination in snake scales.

Demographic analyses of marine and terrestrial snakes (Elapidae) using whole genome sequences

Alastair J. Ludington et al.

Summary: The question of whether spatial aspects of evolution differ in marine versus terrestrial realms has endured since Ernst Mayr's 1954 essay on marine speciation. Marine systems are often suggested to support larger and more highly connected populations, but quantitative comparisons with terrestrial systems have been lacking. The study compared the population histories of marine and terrestrial elapid snakes, revealing highly variable demographic patterns among species that do not clearly correspond to major ecological divisions.

Life history, climate and biogeography interactively affect worldwide genetic diversity of plant and animal populations

H. De Kort et al.

Summary: Understanding how biological and environmental factors interactively shape the global distribution of plant and animal genetic diversity is fundamental to biodiversity conservation. Plants systematically display much lower genetic diversity in local populations compared to animals, with life history traits, such as animal longevity and size, and climate being important factors for predicting the distribution of genetic diversity within populations.

Brown watersnakes (Nerodia taxispilota) as bioindicators of mercury contamination in a riverine system

David L. Haskins et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the dynamics of mercury in reptiles and their potential as bioindicator species for monitoring mercury in aquatic systems are not well understood. It suggests that a common watersnake species, Nerodia taxispilota, likely biomagnifies mercury through their diet, making them effective bioindicator species for monitoring mercury in aquatic environments.

An isolated white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population on St. John, US Virgin Islands shows low inbreeding and comparable heterozygosity to other larger populations

Suzanne L. Nelson et al.

Summary: This study is the first to document the genetic diversity of the white-tailed deer population on St. John, US Virgin Islands. The population was founded by a small number of animals, has limited hunting or predation, and experienced a reduction in size following a drought in 2015. The genetic diversity of the St. John deer population is lower compared to other populations, with similar levels of heterozygosity and little evidence of inbreeding.

Human disturbance causes widespread disruption of animal movement

Tim S. Doherty et al.

Summary: Disturbance and habitat modification by humans have widespread impacts on animal movement, with over two-thirds of cases showing a change in movement by 20% or more. Human activities, such as recreation and hunting, have stronger impacts on animal movement than habitat modification.

PLASMA BIOCHEMISTRY PROFILES OF WILD WESTERN TIGER SNAKES (NOTECHIS SCUTATUS OCCIDENTALIS) BEFORE AND AFTER SIX MONTHS OF CAPTIVITY

Damian C. Lettoof et al.

Summary: The study compared the plasma biochemistries of urban and nonurban snakes, finding no significant difference in health between the two populations. After 6 months in captivity with stable conditions, uncontaminated food and water, and reduced parasite intensity, all snakes showed significant improvements in body mass index and plasma profiles.

Scale-dependent signatures of local adaptation in a foundation tree species

Brenton von Takach et al.

Summary: Understanding local adaptation is crucial for conservation, and this study on mountain ash trees shows that the identification of putatively adaptive loci can vary significantly depending on the spatial scale of analysis. Strong environmental selection was observed, with different genomic patterns of local adaptation at different spatial scales.

Genetic diversity and genomic inbreeding in Japanese Black cows in the islands of Okinawa Prefecture evaluated using single-nucleotide polymorphism array

Ryouhei Suezawa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated genetic diversity and genomic inbreeding in Japanese Black cattle from Okinawa Prefecture and compared them to other locations in Japan using SNP arrays. The results showed slower linkage disequilibrium decay and higher genomic inbreeding coefficients in cows from Okinawa Prefecture, with ROH fragments containing important genetic trait loci.
