Influence of Sulfur Content on Penetration Depth in TIG Welding for High Manganese Stainless Steels

Summary: The TIG welding of high manganese stainless steels was conducted with sulfur contents of 5 and 20 ppm, revealing an increase in penetration depth due to an inward fluid flow caused by the temperature increase. Precise measurements of surface tension using the electromagnetic levitation technique explained that Marangoni convection was the dominant factor in inducing fluid flow in samples with 20 ppm sulfur content. Numerical calculations considering various driving forces confirmed that Marangoni convection controlled the fluid flow direction in the molten pool.
