Chitosan Plasma Chemical Processing in Beam-Plasma Reactors as a Way of Environmentally Friendly Phytostimulants Production

Tatiana Vasilieva et al.

Summary: A novel technique of producing phytoactive water-soluble chitooligosaccharide (COS) in low-temperature plasma was described in this study. The electron beam plasma was used to produce COS from high molecular weight chitosan powder, and laboratory tests showed that COS stimulated root growth in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings and increased flower and fruit numbers in tomato plants. This environmentally friendly technology could be a competitive way to produce biostimulants for commercial agriculture.

Simultaneous production of low molecular weight chitosan and reducing sugar via high molecular chitosan depolymerization by surface discharge plasma

Danfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed a method to simultaneously produce low molecular weight chitosan and reducing sugars through chitosan depolymerization by surface discharge plasma. Active oxygen species and radicals in the discharge plasma played important roles in degrading chitosan and forming low molecular weight chitosan, which ultimately increased its biological activity. Discharge plasma could be an effective technique for chitosan depolymerization, expanding its potential applications.

Production of Low Molecular Weight Chitosan and Chitooligosaccharides (COS): A Review

Cleidiane Goncalves et al.

Summary: Chitosan's molecular weight can be regulated through different hydrolysis methods, with acid hydrolysis being the most commonly used method, but may cause environmental impacts. Combining different hydrolysis methods may be the most effective approach, although it could increase costs. Enzymatic hydrolysis is widely studied due to its environmental advantages and high specificity, but factors such as hydrolysis time and cost still limit its industrial application.
