Registration of the sorghum nested association mapping (NAM) population in RTx430 background

Ramasamy Perumal et al.

Summary: The sorghum NAM population developed at Kansas State University in 2020 consists of 2,121 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from 10 founder lines. These RILs have been genotyped using genotype-by-sequencing, revealing a large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that capture 70% of global SNP variation in sorghum. Currently, the RILs are being used to identify quantitative trait loci markers for various complex traits in sorghum.

Manipulating assimilate availability provides insight into the genes controlling grain size in sorghum

Yongfu Tao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variation in grain size in sorghum in response to assimilate supply by conducting four experiments, and identified 44 QTL related to assimilate availability and 50 QTL related to genetic potential. Functional analysis confirmed the role of the gene SbDEP1 in regulating grain number and size in sorghum. This enhanced understanding of grain size variation will benefit sorghum improvement and have implications for other cereal crops.
