Knockout of the entire family of AITR genes in Arabidopsis leads to enhanced drought and salinity tolerance without fitness costs

Siyu Chen et al.

Summary: Editing AITR genes using CRISPR/Cas9 enhances plant stress tolerance without fitness costs. Knocking out AITR family genes improves plant resilience to abiotic stresses, with sextuple mutants showing normal growth and response to pathogens. AITRs may be targeted for molecular breeding to enhance stress tolerance in various plants, including crops.

From algae to vascular plants: The multistep evolutionary trajectory of the ALDH superfamily towards functional promiscuity and the emergence of structural characteristics

Naim Stiti et al.

Summary: Plant ALDHs are a conserved superfamily of oxidoreductases with a central role in adaptive responses to abiotic stress. Their evolutionary history dates back to ancient times, with major events like conquest of land and vascularization coinciding with changes in ALDH gene and protein abundance, expansion, and diversification. Due to divergence in ALDH sequences, higher plant ALDHs have functional promiscuity and play key roles in both primary and stress-related metabolism.
