Reticulate Evolution, Ancient Chloroplast Haplotypes, and Rapid Radiation of the Australian Plant Genus Adenanthos (Proteaceae)

Francis J. Nge et al.

Summary: The study on Cytonuclear discordance in the Australian endemic plant genus Adenanthos revealed that the incongruence between plastid and nuclear phylogenies was not only caused by incomplete lineage sorting, but also due to extensive ancient introgression and recent chloroplast capture and introgression. This deep reticulation coincided with the rapid radiation of the genus during the Miocene and suggests that ancient introgression may play an important role in the evolution of the Australian flora more broadly.
