The Complex Story of Plant Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Channels

Edwin Jarratt-Barnham et al.

Summary: Plant CNGCs are tetrameric cation channels activated by cNMPs like cAMP and cGMP. Arabidopsis thaliana encodes 20 CNGC subunits involved in development, stress response, and immunity. Recent findings show that CNGC subunits form heterotetrameric complexes with distinct behavior, affecting signaling pathways.

Plastidial transporters KEA1 and KEA2 at the inner envelope membrane adjust stromal pH in the dark

Maria Nieves Aranda Sicilia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of two envelope transporters, KEA1 and KEA2, in regulating stromal pH in Arabidopsis chloroplasts. It was found that KEA1 and KEA2 mediate K+ uptake/H+ loss to modulate stromal pH. While light-stimulated alkalinization was independent of KEA1 and KEA2, the dark-induced return to neutral pH was delayed in the kea1kea2 mutants.

Plant HKT Channels: An Updated View on Structure, Function and Gene Regulation

Janin Riedelsberger et al.

Summary: HKT channels are a plant protein family responsible for sodium and potassium uptake, as well as Na+-K+ homeostasis. They are divided into two classes based on sequence polymorphisms and play diverse roles in salt tolerance and potassium shortage responses in plants.

Loss of function of the chloroplast membrane K+/H+ antiporters AtKEA1 and AtKEA2 alters the ROS and NO metabolism but promotes drought stress resilience

Antonio Sanchez-McSweeney et al.

Summary: Through studying the Arabidopsis double knock-out kea1kea2 mutants, it was found that the loss of function of the chloroplast K+ efflux antiporters KEA1 and KEA2 did not cause oxidative stress, but it affected ROS homeostasis and some ROS-generating enzymes. Additionally, the mutants showed an increased photorespiratory pathway and stomata closure, leading to a higher resilience to drought stress.

Genome-Wide Analysis of Potassium Channel Genes in Rice: Expression of the OsAKT and OsKAT Genes under Salt Stress

Zahra Musavizadeh et al.

Summary: Potassium (K+), an essential element for plant growth, plays a crucial role in regulating various cellular processes through potassium channels. This study characterized several K+ channel genes in rice, analyzed their physiochemical properties, and explored their expression patterns under salt stress. The findings provide insights into the structural and functional aspects of K+ channel genes in rice, highlighting their importance in plant growth and stress responses.

Loss of inner-envelope K+/H+ exchangers impairs plastid rRNA maturation and gene expression

Rachael Ann DeTar et al.

Summary: Simultaneous loss of KEA1 and KEA2 results in maturation defects of plastid ribosomal RNAs, possibly due to secondary structure changes and reduced binding of RNA-processing proteins. This leads to low levels of protein synthesis and plastome-encoded proteins, activating retrograde signaling and suppressing PhANG expression to delay chloroplast development.
