Genomic analyses of diverse wild and cultivated accessions provide insights into the evolutionary history of jujube

Mingxin Guo et al.

Summary: The Chinese jujube is an important perennial fruit tree crop with economic, ecological, and nutritional value. Through population genomic analysis, it was found that jujube's primary domestication center was in the Shanxi-Shaanxi area of China, before it spread into East and South China. Divergence events analysis suggested a divergence between Ziziphus acidojujuba and Ziziphus jujuba around 2.7 million years ago, indicating a possible long pre-domestication period. The study also identified genetic markers associated with seed-setting rate and fruit weight regulation in jujubes, providing insights into the genetic basis of jujube evolution and domestication.

Domestication of Crop Metabolomes: Desired and Unintended Consequences

Saleh Alseekh et al.

Summary: Most crops and vegetables today were domesticated from their wild ancestors in the last 12,000 years. Research has focused on identifying the genes undergoing positive and negative selection during crop domestication and improvement. Studies have shown changes in metabolite contents due to human selection, but the full extent of metabolic consequences of breeding is still being uncovered. The shaping of crop metabolomes through domestication processes has potential implications for metabolite engineering in wild relatives of crops.

Genomic basis of high-altitude adaptation in Tibetan Prunus fruit trees

Xia Wang et al.

Summary: The study found genetic differentiation between Tibetan peaches at different altitudes, with genes associated with light stress signaling enriched in differentiated regions. Phenylpropanoids were found to be positively correlated with altitudes. Specific SINE retrotransposons were identified in Tibetan peaches, playing a role in promoting the accumulation of beneficial metabolites for adaptation to harsh environments in the Himalayan region.

New high-quality peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) genome assembly to analyze the molecular evolutionary mechanism of volatile compounds in peach fruits

Ke Cao et al.

Summary: A chromosome-level genome assembly and sequence analysis of Chinese Cling, an important founder cultivar for peach breeding programs, revealed genetic variations and volatile compounds. A genome-wide association analysis identified 25 quantitative trait loci associated with seven volatile compounds. This high-quality peach genome offers valuable insights for future fruit improvement.

Population-scale peach genome analyses unravel selection patterns and biochemical basis underlying fruit flavor

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: The narrow genetic basis and strong linkage disequilibrium in modern peach cultivars have limited the resolution power for association studies in this fruit species. By assembling the genome of a Chinese landrace, Longhua Shui Mi (LHSM), researchers have revealed convergent selection for sweetness and divergent selection for acidity in eastern vs. western modern peach cultivars through population genomic analyses.
