A Comparative Analysis of Quantitative Metrics of Root Architecture

Harini Rangarajan et al.

Summary: High throughput phenotyping is crucial for bridging the gap between genotype and phenotype, and the methods used should be robust, relatively stable, and provide reliable estimates of elementary phenotypic components. This study evaluates quantitative phenotypic metrics using functional-structural modeling to describe root architecture, finding that certain phenes such as root number, root diameter, and lateral root branching density are stable and reliable measures. Additionally, metrics aggregating multiple phenes estimate different subsets of constituent phenes but may not provide information about underlying phene states.
