Wood forming tissue-specific expression ofPdSuSyandHCHLincreases holocellulose content and improves saccharification inPopulus

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: Developing strategies to break down lignocellulosic biomass in tree species is crucial for biofuels and biomaterials production. By overexpressing PdSuSy and HCHL genes in hybrid poplars, researchers significantly increased cellulose, xylan, and glucose content, as well as saccharification efficiency, while inhibiting growth characteristics. This study demonstrates the complexity of cell wall polymers in wood tissue and proposes a potential method to enhance biomass saccharification in woody species.

Multi-Approach Analysis Reveals Local Adaptation in a Widespread Forest Tree of Reunion Island

Edith Garot et al.

Summary: This study combines different methods to investigate leaf adaptive traits in Coffea mauritiana and suggests that cuticular wax composition and genes associated with cell wall remodeling may play key roles in the local adaptation processes of this forest tree. The findings provide new insights into the adaptation of non-model species and highlight the importance of cuticle composition for trees to adapt to high evaporative demand in warm climates.

Expression of a bacterial 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase (QsuB) reduces lignin and improves biomass saccharification efficiency in switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.)

Zhangying Hao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the successful transfer of the QsuB engineering approach from a model plant to switchgrass, resulting in reduced lignin content and increased accumulation of a valuable co-product. Careful consideration of the choice of promoter for driving QsuB expression is necessary when applying this strategy to other bioenergy crops.

Association mapping for maize stover yield and saccharification efficiency using a multiparent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) population

A. Lopez-Malvar et al.

Summary: This study identified SNPs associated with increased stover yield and improved saccharification efficiency in maize, providing valuable information for breeding programs. It also highlighted the potential of using markers in genomic or marker-assisted selection programs to improve biomass quality for ethanol production. The research opens up a possible pathway for optimizing the viability of second-generation biofuels.

Seedling developmental defects upon blocking CINNAMATE-4-HYDROXYLASE are caused by perturbations in auxin transport

Ilias El Houari et al.

Summary: Blocking the functionality of C4H in the phenylpropanoid pathway affects the growth and development of Arabidopsis seedlings, resulting in reduced lateral rooting and increased adventitious rooting apically. These effects are related to inhibition in AUX transport. The proper deposition of lignin is crucial for establishing AUX distribution in seedlings.

Prior secondary cell wall formation is required for gelatinous layer deposition and posture control in gravi-stimulated aspen

Naoki Takata et al.

Summary: The study found that wood fiber cells lacking SCWs in aspen trees had thinner SCWs or even no SCW, while cells with SCWs formed G-layers. Mutants showed growth eccentricity and posture control deficiencies when grown on an incline, indicating the essential role of SCWs in G-layer formation and posture control.
