Nano-sulforaphane attenuates PhIP-induced early abnormal embryonic neuro-development

Ping Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that Nano-SFN can protect against PhIP-induced nervous system defects and increase embryo survival rate. It provides a new perspective for the development of SFN as a neuroprotective drug.

Nociceptor-localized cGMP-dependent protein kinase I is a critical generator for central sensitization and neuropathic pain

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: Patients with neuropathic pain often experience heightened pain and anxiety, which are thought to be maintained by central sensitization. While the exact mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear, studies have shown that peripherally localized cGMP-dependent protein kinase I (PKG-I) plays a role in nociceptor plasticity and spinal synaptic transmission. Targeted treatments against PKG-I in damaged nerves have been shown to alleviate pain hypersensitivity and anxiety in neuropathic pain patients, suggesting a novel therapeutic target.

Effects of in vitro metabolism of a broccoli leachate, glucosinolates andS-methylcysteine sulphoxide on the human faecal microbiome

Lee Kellingray et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bacterial-mediated bioconversion of glucosinolates and SMCSO using a broccoli leachate, showing enhanced growth of lactobacilli and increased levels of short-chain fatty acids in microbial communities cultured in the leachate. Escherichia isolates from these communities were found to bioconvert glucosinolates and SMCSO, potentially leading to additional health benefits for the host.

Sulforaphane alleviates hyperalgesia and enhances analgesic potency of morphine in rats with cancer-induced bone pain

Jie Fu et al.

Summary: The study showed that SFN can alleviate pain hypersensitivity caused by cancer, activate Nrf2 and HO-1, inhibit NF-kappa B and reduce inflammation-related factors. Additionally, SFN inhibits proliferation of Walker 256 cells, promotes MOR expression in SH-SY5Y cells, and enhances the antihyperalgesic effects of morphine by restoring MOR expression in the spinal cord.

Neuroprotective potential of isothiocyanates in an in vitro model of neuroinflammation

Tiziana Latronico et al.

Summary: The study showed that SFN and PEITC could counteract H2O2-induced ROS production, and were effective inhibitors of MMP-9, with SFN significantly inhibiting MMP-2 activity as well. Additionally, all the ITCs used significantly inhibited the expression of both MMP-2 and MMP-9.

Summary: This study investigated changes in the neuron-glial networks controlling visceral perception along the gut-brain axis during colitis and assessed the effects of peripheral glial manipulation. Modulation of peripheral glia activity emerges as a promising strategy for counteracting visceral pain induced by colitis.

The interplay between diet, gut microbes, and host epigenetics in health and disease

Tori Shock et al.

Summary: The mechanisms connecting microbe function to host health are not yet fully understood, with recent exploration focusing on microbe-mediated changes in the host epigenome. Consumption of specific dietary components impacts the composition and function of gut microbiota, which in turn regulates important epigenetic functions that influence host health. This complex interplay between diet, gut microbes, and host epigenetics plays a key role in promoting protection against disease development.
