Solving the problem of overdetermination of quasisymmetric equilibrium solutions by near-axis expansions. I. Generalized force balance

E. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Research has shown that it is possible to circumvent the problem of overdetermination and demonstrate the potential existence of globally quasisymmetric fields even in equilibria with anisotropic pressure by using higher order power-series solutions.

Solving the problem of overdetermination of quasisymmetric equilibrium solutions by near-axis expansions. II. Circular axis stellarator solutions

E. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study applies the near-axis expansion method to construct numerical solutions for quasisymmetric magnetic fields with anisotropic pressure, finding solutions up to second order from the axis. The method presented in this paper is able to avoid the overdetermination problem compared to the standard Garren-Boozer construction.

On quasisymmetric plasma equilibria sustained by small force

Peter Constantin et al.

Summary: Smooth, non-symmetric plasma equilibria with closed, nested flux surfaces were constructed and solutions to the magnetohydrostatic equations were found by changing the smooth structure in space to make a desired quasisymmetry direction Killing for the new metric. These solutions are 'nearly' quasisymmetric on flat space up to a small forcing when the quasisymmetry direction is close to a symmetry of Euclidean space.

Generalized Boozer coordinates: A natural coordinate system for quasisymmetry

E. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: The study proves the existence of generalized Boozer coordinates, a straight-field-line coordinate system for magnetic fields with nested toroidal flux surfaces. This coordinate system provides a convenient way to describe general quasisymmetric configurations and their properties.

Connection between quasisymmetric magnetic fields and anisotropic pressure equilibria in fusion plasmas

E. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This work suggests that a change in the equilibrium paradigm can ameliorate limitations in steady-state quasisymmetric equilibrium and demonstrates a deep physical connection between quasisymmetry and magnetostatic equilibria with anisotropic pressure.
