Application of Wray-Agarwal Turbulence Model for Numerical Simulation of Gas-Solid Flows in Circulating Fluidized Bed Risers

Yali Shao et al.

Summary: This study employed the WA model to simulate gas-solid two-phase flows in CFB risers for the first time and compared its accuracy and efficiency with other two-equation models. The results demonstrate the promising potential of the WA model in simulating gas-solid multiphase flows.

An urban dispersion inspired scenario for CFD model validation

Alexander L. Brown et al.

Summary: Momentum, advection, diffusion, and turbulence are component physics related to fire simulation tools like computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Magnetic Resonance Velocimetry and Magnetic Resonance Concentration techniques can provide detailed measurements of three-component velocity and concentration fields in turbulent flows. This study compares 3D flow between velocity and concentration fields obtained using different measurement techniques for urban geometry, showing good consistency between model and experimental results.

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent reacting flows with shock waves and stiff chemistry using many-core/GPU acceleration

Swapnil Desai et al.

Summary: This paper presents the implementation of a seventh-order WENO7M scheme in the newly developed DNS code KARFS, accelerated by GPU computation. Performance characteristics and scalability are studied using different grid sizes and block decomposition, demonstrating the performance portability of KARFS on various architectures. The capability and potential of the newly implemented WENO7M scheme in KARFS to perform DNS of compressible flows are also demonstrated with model problems involving shocks, isotropic turbulence, detonations, and flame propagation into a stratified mixture with complex chemical kinetics.

Large-eddy simulations of the flow over a semi-circular cylinder at Re=50 0 0 0

Dmitry A. Lysenko et al.

Summary: This study presents Large-eddy simulations (LES) of flow over a semi-circular cylinder at a diameter-based Reynolds number of 5000 with zero angle of attack. The test problem has been less investigated in literature, making it challenging for validation of computational codes. The simulations show reasonable agreement with available measurements and previous results for circular and square cylinders.

Commissioning of an MRI test facility for CFD-grade flow experiments in replicas of nuclear fuel assemblies and other reactor components

Martin Bruschewski et al.

Summary: A new test facility utilizes MRV measurement technique to support single-phase isothermal fluid mechanics experiments for nuclear reactor safety studies. The MRV technique offers full three-dimensional representation of flow fields in models of nuclear fuel assemblies, with faster model preparation and measurement times compared to laser-optical techniques. The experimental data obtained with MRV is referred to as 'CFD grade data' as it allows full-field validation of CFD numerical solutions.

Yuquan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different water depths and hub positions on the wake of a scaled turbine, revealing that the shear layer of the wake is transversally elliptical, downstream turbulence intensity transitions from trimodal to bimodal distribution, and wake rotational velocity is greater in the transversal plane than in the lateral plane.

Large eddy simulations of high Reynolds number turbulence based on interscale energy transfer among resolved scales

J. Andrzej Domaradzki

Summary: This study demonstrates a method to evaluate unknown constants in SGS models and derive new models in LESs using subgrid-scale energy transfer among resolved scales. Results show that the performance of models in LESs depends not only on their ability to capture total SGS dissipation but also on the distribution of SGS dissipation among scales of motion.
