Large-eddy simulation of droplet-laden cough jets with a realistic manikin model

Haiwen Ge et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic methods were used to simulate a cough jet with droplets, modeling turbulent flow using large-eddy simulation. An Eulerian-Lagrangian approach was adopted to model the two-phase flows, considering droplet breakup, evaporation, dispersion, and drag forces. Validation results showed that the variable area inlet velocity profile matched better with experimental data.

Extended Lifetime of Respiratory Droplets in a Turbulent Vapor Puff and Its Implications on Airborne Disease Transmission

Kai Leong Chong et al.

Summary: The study found that in high humidity environments, the lifetime of small particles in respiratory droplets is significantly extended, allowing them to be transported much further by turbulent eddies. These findings provide insight into optimizing indoor ventilation and humidity control strategies and are crucial for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic in the current autumn and upcoming winter.

Evolution of spray and aerosol from respiratory releases: theoretical estimates for insight on viral transmission

P. M. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: By modeling the evaporation and settling of droplets emitted during respiratory releases, this study found that aerosols generated by continuous speaking have a higher suspended viral dose, making physical distancing alone insufficient for safety, while ventilation can reduce the risk of infection.

Effect of co-flow on fluid dynamics of a cough jet with implications in spread of COVID-19

Sachidananda Behera et al.

Summary: The study investigates the temporal evolution of a cough jet from an infected individual and found that the presence of a co-flow can significantly affect the jet's dynamics. The velocity and distance traveled by the cough jet decrease over time, but with a 10% co-flow, the jet travels faster and covers a similar distance in a shorter time, increasing the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Direct numerical simulation of the turbulent flow generated during a violent expiratory event

Alexandre Fabregat et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the hydrodynamics produced by a violent expiratory event resembling a mild cough, showing that factors like exhaled velocity, buoyancy, and temperature differences affect gas dispersion dynamics. Numerical results suggest that while analytical models provide reasonable estimates of the distance traveled by the gas puff, trajectory predictions show larger deviations from the direct numerical simulation (DNS).

Experimental characterization of speech aerosol dispersion dynamics

Zu Puayen Tan et al.

Summary: This study quantified the dispersal of aerosols from vocalization by a human subject using high-speed particle image velocimetry, finding that there is no correlation between aerosol production and penetration. The dispersion process consists of a rapidly penetrating jet phase followed by a slow puff phase, with immediate dilution of aerosols prevented by vortex ring flow structures. A high-fidelity assessment of risks to exposure should consider aerosol production rate, penetration, plume direction, and prevailing air current.

Role of pulsatility on particle dispersion in expiratory flows

K. Monroe et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of secondary and tertiary expulsions on particle dispersion and penetration using direct numerical simulation of turbulent pulsatile jets and Lagrangian particle tracking of micron-sized droplets. It is found that increased pulsatility hinders the dispersion and penetration of the entire particle cloud, but particles emanating from secondary or tertiary expulsions experience enhanced penetration due to acceleration downstream by vortex structures.

Peering inside a cough or sneeze to explain enhanced airborne transmission under dry weather

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: Through high-fidelity simulations, it was found that smaller droplets evaporate quickly while non-volatile substances continue to spread in the air, leading to an increase in potentially virus-laden droplet nuclei. The study also indicated that dry ambient conditions could increase the number of airborne nuclei carrying contagions.

Modeling aerosol cloud aerodynamics during human coughing, talking, and breathing actions

Mamdud Hossain et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aerosol cloud flow physics during three respiratory actions by humans and emphasized the importance of social distancing in indoor places. The results indicated that aerosols released from continuous talking and sudden coughing travel a similar distance, while those exhaled from breathing do not travel far but float in the air for an extended period.

Investigation of theoretical scaling laws using large eddy simulations for airborne spreading of viral contagion from sneezing and coughing

K. Liu et al.

Summary: By using large eddy point-particle simulations, the fluid dynamics of an ejected puff resulting from a cough/sneeze was explored. It was observed that while global puff properties such as centroid, volume, momentum, and buoyancy remained consistent across realizations, other properties like shape, extent, and velocity may vary. A portion of the puff was also seen to split off and advance in random directions, providing a mechanism for virus-laden droplets to travel over large distances in a short amount of time.

Computational modelling of nasal respiratory flow

H. Calmet et al.

Summary: CFD has shown great potential as a diagnostic tool in clinical trials, but overall statistical findings from large population samples are necessary for real clinical applications. This study compared a highly-resolved solution with lower resolution models to determine minimum modelling criteria for accurate respiratory flows in large-scale clinical applications. Results indicated that lower resolution models could achieve sufficient accuracy if mean flow was considered, and a stable transient result required data at least from the second respiration cycle. The study's findings offer guidance for future modelling efforts in clinical and engineering applications.
