High T c Superconductivity in Heavy Rare Earth Hydrides

Hao Song et al.

Summary: Recently, carbonaceous sulfur hydride was found to exhibit room temperature superconductivity under high pressure. The authors theoretically identified two sodalite-type clathrate hydrides, YbH6 and LuH6, which may have high superconducting critical temperatures at lower pressures. This is attributed to the electron-phonon coupling enhancement due to the presence of filled f-shells in the YbH6 and LuH6 compounds.

Novel Strongly Correlated Europium Superhydrides

Dmitrii Semenok et al.

Summary: A joint experimental-theoretical investigation revealed novel magnetic Eu superhydrides with distinct magnetic orderings and phase transitions. The study showed that the atomic radius plays a significant role in the symmetry-breaking distortions and thermodynamic stability of superhydrides, as evidenced by close agreement between experimental data and predictions based on the DFT+U approach.

Densest ternary sphere packings

Ryotaro Koshoji et al.

Summary: In this study, an exhaustive exploration of densest ternary sphere packings (DTSPs) for 45 radius ratios and 237 kinds of compositions was conducted using a random structure searching method under periodic boundary conditions. A total of 38 putative DTSPs were identified, with 37 of them discovered in the study. The structural trend of DTSPs is particularly influenced by the radius of small spheres.

LaBH8: Towards high-Tc low-pressure superconductivity in ternary superhydrides

Simone Di Cataldo et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new high-Tc hydride superconductor, LaBH8, is computationally predicted to have a Tc of 126 K at a pressure of 50 GPa, making it thermodynamically stable above 100 GPa and dynamically stable down to 40 GPa. LaBH8's unique structure, a ternary sodalite-like hydride, is stabilized by a metallic hydrogen sublattice supported by La-B scaffolding, allowing for a more efficient packing of atoms than in binary sodalite hydrides due to the combination of elements of different sizes.
