Quenched free energy from spacetime D-branes

Kazumi Okuyama

Summary: The study introduces a useful integral representation of the quenched free energy applicable to any random systems, involving the generating function of multi-boundary correlators. When applied to the Airy limit of the random matrix model, the resulting quenched free energy is found to be a monotonically decreasing function of temperature.

Comments on wormholes, ensembles, and cosmology

Mark Van Raamsdonk

Summary: This passage discusses closed-universe big-bang/big-crunch cosmological spacetimes obtained from Euclidean wormholes, highlighting a holographic model for cosmology. It suggests key features for a general approach to cosmology using non-interacting copies of a Euclidean holographic CFT coupled with auxiliary degrees of freedom. The Lorentzian cosmological spacetime is encoded in a wavefunction of the universe living in the Hilbert space of the auxiliary degrees of freedom.

Solving puzzles in deformed JT gravity: phase transitions and non-perturbative effects

Clifford V. Johnson et al.

Summary: Recent work has shown that certain deformations of the scalar potential in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity can be written as double-scaled matrix models. However, some of these deformations exhibit a breakdown of unitarity with negative spectral density. The source of the problem lies in the presence of a multi-valued solution of the leading order matrix model string equation, which leads to perturbative and non-perturbative inconsistencies in the theory.

SYK wormhole formation in real time

Juan Maldacena et al.

Summary: We investigate the real-time formation of the ground state of two coupled SYK models, finding that the system forms a wormhole through a region with negative specific heat in a time independent of system size N. The dynamics is smooth and appears to follow equilibrium thermodynamic configurations of the microcanonical ensemble. Additionally, we discuss the relationship between the coupled SYK model and the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity theory with bulk fields.

The entropy of Hawking radiation

Ahmed Almheiri et al.

Summary: This review discusses recent progress on the black hole information problem, focusing on a new understanding of calculating the entropy of Hawking radiation. It shows how the method for computing gravitational fine-grained entropy can be extended to account for the entropy of Hawking radiation, revealing significant corrections needed for consistency with unitary black hole evaporation.

Late time physics of holographic quantum chaos

Alexander Altland et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between quantum chaotic systems and random matrix theory, describing an effective field theory description derived from a simple symmetry-breaking principle and Goldstone modes. It also discusses a general framework within AdS/CFT for expressing correlations between different universes.

Free energy from replica wormholes

Netta Engelhardt et al.

Summary: The text discusses the challenge of Euclidean wormholes to the standard quantum mechanical interpretation and suggests that gravitational path integral computes the ensemble average of multiple theories. It highlights the contribution of connected topologies to the free energy and evidence of replica symmetry breaking in both JT gravity and a simplified version of CGHS. The insights about ensemble averaging in gravity from this perspective are also discussed.

Euclidean wormhole in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Antonio M. Garcia-Garcia et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with complex couplings is investigated, and a low temperature transition to a gapped phase characterized by a constant in temperature free energy is identified. A gravity interpretation of these results is proposed by constructing an explicit solution of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with matter, which involves a two-dimensional Euclidean wormhole with the geometry of a double trumpet. This transition from a disconnected phase with two black holes to the connected wormhole phase is observed as the temperature decreases, demonstrating how a Euclidean wormhole can arise from an average over field theory couplings.

Explorations of nonperturbative Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and supergravity

Clifford Johnson

Summary: This article explores recently proposed definitions of JT gravity and supergravities, based on combinations of minimal string models, focusing on physics beyond perturbative expansion in spacetime topology. By using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, physics can be extracted with high accuracy in a simple controlled truncation scheme. Nonperturbative spectral densities are explicitly computed and displayed, including important contributions from wormhole geometries.
