Multimode luminescence thermometry based on emission and excitation spectra

Ilya E. Kolesnikov et al.

Summary: Luminescence thermometers are widely used for contactless and noninvasive temperature sensing, with most known sensors using a single parameter to define temperature. YVO4:Er3+ 0.1 at.% sample was reported as a thermal sensor in the 299-466 K range, utilizing multiple sensing techniques such as luminescence intensity ratio and spectral line position. Sub-degree temperature resolution was provided by all studied sensing methods.

Mapping Elevated Temperatures with a Micrometer Resolution Using the Luminescence of Chemically Stable Upconversion Nanoparticles

Thomas P. van Swieten et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates high spatial resolution nanothermometry at elevated temperatures using chemically stable upconversion nanoparticles and confocal microscopy. Distortions in the luminescence spectra, intrinsic to samples with nanoscale photonic inhomogeneities, are corrected to extend the range of high-resolution nanothermometry beyond 500 K with a precision of 1-4 K. This work will improve the accuracy of nanothermometry not only in micro- and nanoelectronics, but also in other fields with photonically inhomogeneous substrates.
