Biotechnological production of the European corn borer sex pheromone in the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica

Karolis Petkevicius et al.

Summary: This study developed a biotechnological method to produce the sex pheromone of the European corn borer using engineered yeast, achieving high titers of the pheromone component. The research opens up possibilities for fermentation-based production of ECB pheromones for pest management.

Spatial analysis of changes in Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) distribution depending on diets

Jae-Min Jung et al.

Summary: This study aimed to predict the potential distribution of Plodia interpunctella feeding on four different diets using a CLIMEX model, with the highest climatic suitability found in rice bran. The results provide basic data for the management of this pest based on species distribution modeling and show different predicted distribution patterns based on diet and climate.

Evolution of the codling moth pheromone via an ancient gene duplication

Jean-Marc Lassance et al.

Summary: This study identified the role of the FAD gene family in the biosynthesis of sex pheromones in the codling moth, revealing wide distribution and diverse expression patterns of FAD genes in the genome. The gene Cpo_CPRQ, exclusively expressed in the female pheromone gland, was found to encode an FAD with unique desaturation activities. The evolution of the signature pheromone structure in olethreutine moths was shown to depend on an ancient gene expansion.

Biosynthesis of the Sex Pheromone Component (E,Z)-7,9-Dodecadienyl Acetate in the European Grapevine Moth, Lobesia botrana, Involving increment 11 Desaturation and an Elusive increment 7 Desaturase

Bao-Jian Ding et al.

Summary: The European grapevine moth uses (E,Z)-7,9-dodecadienyl acetate as its main sex pheromone component. Research has shown that this doubly unsaturated pheromone component is produced through specific metabolic pathways of fatty acids. Further analysis of the transcriptome and genes involved in the synthesis of sex pheromones revealed multiple candidate genes that may play a role in this process.

Latest Developments in Insect Sex Pheromone Research and Its Application in Agricultural Pest Management

Syed Arif Hussain Rizvi et al.

Summary: Insect pheromones, particularly sex pheromones, have been highly successful in controlling low density pest populations and reducing pest populations with minimal impact on their natural enemies. Mass trapping and mating disruption strategies using sex pheromones have significantly decreased the use of conventional insecticides, providing sustainable and eco-friendly pest management in agricultural crops. Recent interdisciplinary research has greatly advanced our understanding of pheromone perception mechanisms and their practical applications in agricultural pest management.
