Decreased prevalence of the Plasmodium falciparum Pfcrt K76T and Pfmdr1 and N86Y mutations post-chloroquine treatment withdrawal in Katete District, Eastern Zambia

Mwenda C. Mulenga et al.

Summary: The study showed a complete recovery of chloroquine-sensitive parasites in Katete District, Eastern Zambia by 2016, 13 years after the withdrawal of chloroquine in the country. These findings provide additional evidence for a fitness cost in chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum in Zambia and elsewhere. Further research is recommended to monitor resistance nationwide and explore the feasibility of integrating chloroquine into combination therapy in the future.

Residual malaria in Jazan region, southwestern Saudi Arabia: the situation, challenges and climatic drivers of autochthonous malaria

Hesham M. Al-Mekhlafi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of residual malaria in Jazan region and identified potential climatic drivers of autochthonous malaria cases. It found that malaria remains a public health problem in the region, with age, gender, nationality, and residence being associated with malaria cases. Monthly average temperature and relative humidity were significant climatic determinants of autochthonous malaria in the region.

Chloroquine and Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine Resistance in Sub-Saharan Africa-A Review

Alexandra T. Roux et al.

Summary: Malaria is a significant global health concern, particularly in Africa, with drug resistance being a major challenge in controlling the disease. Efforts to track drug resistance and monitor sensitivity are crucial to prevent further spread of resistant parasites and potential reappearance of sensitivity in sub-Saharan Africa.
