A phylogenetic framework to investigate the microsporidian communities through metabarcoding and its application to lake ecosystems

Aurore Dubuffet et al.

Summary: Microsporidia, as obligate intracellular eukaryotic parasites, exhibit high diversity in lacustrine ecosystems, with approximately a quarter possibly representing undescribed genera or families. Variations in the abundance of Microsporidia were observed between the two lakes sampled and across the sampling period, potentially influenced by spatio-temporal variations of their potential hosts such as microeukaryotes and metazooplankton.

Intestinal Microsporidia Infection in Leukemic Children: Microscopic and Molecular Detection

Amel Youssef Shehab et al.

Summary: Microsporidia infection in leukemic children was detected in 23% of the cases using modified trichrome stain and 29% of the cases using PCR. Among the positive samples, Enterocytozoon bieneusi predominated in 20 cases, Encephalitozoon intestinalis in three cases, while two cases showed co-infection. Sequencing of unspeciated samples revealed homology with Encephalitozoon hellei and Encephalitozoon cuniculi. PCR exhibited 72.4% sensitivity and 97.2% specificity in this study. Diarrhea and colic were significantly associated with microsporidia infection.
