Tick-borne Pathogens Detected in the Blood of Immunosuppressed Norwegian Patients Living in a Tick-endemic Area

Hanne Quarsten et al.

Summary: The occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in the blood of patients with autoimmune conditions requiring immunosuppressive treatment was evaluated, with a detection rate of 8.6%. The main pathogen detected was Ca. Neoehrlichia mikurensis, with potential thromboembolic complications if left untreated.

Summary: Neoehrlichiosis caused by Ca. N. mikurensis is an emerging tick-borne infectious disease that can lead to vascular complications. Younger age is a risk factor for developing vascular events. There may be qualitative differences in the incidence of vascular events between immunosuppressed and immunocompetent patients.

Infections with Tickborne Pathogens after Tick Bite, Austria, 2015-2018

Mateusz Markowicz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk of tickborne infections after a tick bite. Findings showed that the risk of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. infection was increased with full engorgement of the tick and confirmation of B. burgdorferi s.l. in the tick by PCR, with a mention of other participants being infected with different pathogens. Additionally, Rickettsia helvetica was abundant in ticks but not pathogenic to humans.
