Climate-driven connectivity changes of the Black Sea since 430 ka: Testing a dual palynological and geochemical approach

Thomas M. Hoyle et al.

Summary: The Black Sea's connectivity with the Mediterranean and Caspian seas during the Quaternary was influenced by global sea-level variations. Analysis of dinoflagellate cysts and strontium isotopes revealed different patterns of connection during glacials and interglacials, with Mediterranean water entering the Black Sea during highstands and Caspian input possibly during lowstands.

Paleoenvironmental changes and vegetation of the Transylvanian Basin in the early stages of Lake Pannon (late Miocene, Tortonian)

Viktoria Baranyi et al.

Summary: The new palynological data from the deep-water Gusterita section in the Transylvanian Basin provides insights into the late Miocene evolution of Lake Pannon. The analysis of spores, pollen, and dinoflagellate cysts sheds light on the vegetation, climate, and lake ecology during this period. The study also highlights the relationship between the expansion of Lake Pannon, changes in vegetation, and the influence of mountain uplift and volcanism.

Palynology and sedimentology of the Pliocene Productive Series from eastern Azerbaijan

Keith Richards et al.

Summary: A palynological study of the Pliocene Productive Series in eastern Azerbaijan was conducted on 239 outcrop samples, revealing that most samples represent fluvial environments, while mudstone and siltstones contain 'Caspian lake' transgressions. The rich assemblages in the samples include tree pollen elements such as Pinus, Alnus, and Betula, indicating rapid changes in Caspian Sea level during the Pliocene.

Taxonomy and nomenclature in palaeopalynology: basic principles, current challenges and future perspectives

Julia Gravendyck et al.

Summary: Effective communication of taxonomic concepts is crucial for all biological sciences, especially in the field of palynology. The International Code of Nomenclature provides rules for naming algae, fungi, and plants, but there are discrepancies between rules and practices in palynology that need to be addressed. Clarifying procedures and recommending best practices can lead to improved taxonomic stability and communication in this area of study.

Late Miocene megalake regressions in Eurasia

Dan Valentin Palcu et al.

Summary: The largest megalake in the late Miocene Eurasia experienced several episodes of hydrological instability and partial desiccation, with major regressions correlating with aridification events, vegetation changes and faunal turnovers in Europe. The Paratethys Sea was profoundly transformed during regression episodes, losing significant water volume and surface area. Partial desiccations of the megalake matched with climate, food-web and landscape changes throughout Eurasia, although the exact triggers and mechanisms remain unresolved.
