Biogeography a key influence on distal forelimb variation in horses through the Cenozoic

Summary: This study examines the morphology of the forelimb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of horses and their extinct kin using geometric morphometrics, finding significant temporal correlations at 0-1 Myr intervals and a clear division between New and Old World horse morphologies. Summary: Sauropod dinosaurs, the largest terrestrial vertebrates, underwent significant modifications in their bodies, including their skulls, to accommodate their giant size. Through re-evaluating early sauropodomorph Anchisaurus cranial material, it was revealed that sauropod-like cranial characters in related sauropodomorphs appear late in ontogeny, suggesting a timing shift in development leading to new phenotypes and feeding specializations in sauropods. This developmental shift occurred in association with evolutionary changes in gigantism, physiology, and locomotion.

The metatree approach offers a more immediate route for generating higher-level phylogenies of extinct taxa and allows for re-evaluation of macroevolutionary hypotheses derived only from extant taxa.
