Through re-evaluating early sauropodomorph Anchisaurus cranial material, it was revealed that sauropod-like cranial characters in related sauropodomorphs appear late in ontogeny, suggesting a timing shift in development leading to new phenotypes and feeding specializations in sauropods. This developmental shift occurred in association with evolutionary changes in gigantism, physiology, and locomotion.
