Integrating the evidence for a terrestrial carbon sink caused by increasing atmospheric CO2

Anthony P. Walker et al.

Summary: Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has the potential to enhance plant growth and contribute to a global terrestrial carbon sink, slowing down the rate of climate change. However, the complexity of ecosystem responses and interactions with other global change factors make it challenging to determine the exact impact of CO2 on the climate.

Model-Based Estimation of Amazonian Forests Recovery Time after Drought and Fire Events

Bruno L. De Faria et al.

Summary: This study combined different methods to assess the impacts of disturbances on forest recovery in the Amazon region. It was found that forests affected by drought, fire, and logging + fire had reduced aboveground biomass and longer recovery times. The long-term damage caused by these disturbances may result in permanent and increasing carbon losses from fragile ecosystems.

Large carbon sink potential of secondary forests in the Brazilian Amazon to mitigate climate change

Viola H. A. Heinrich et al.

Summary: Tropical secondary forests in the Brazilian Amazon have been found to sequester carbon at a faster rate in the west compared to the east, with disturbances impacting regrowth rates. Avoiding fires and deforestation could increase carbon stock in these forests.

Paleovegetation seesaw in Brazil since the Late Pleistocene: Amultiproxy study of two biomes

Vitor Azevedo et al.

Summary: This study utilized different geological records to investigate the periods of paleovegetation and soil changes in the Cerrado biome in central Brazil, revealing different transition periods compared to the Caatinga biome in northeastern Brazil, suggesting a potential temporal relationship between ancient vegetation changes in the two regions. The research also highlighted the significant role of atmospheric pCO(2) and temperature variations in the paleovegetation transition in the Cerrado region, while precipitation was identified as the major modulator of paleovegetation in the Caatinga region.
