The physiological effects of creatine supplementation in fetal sheep before, during, and after umbilical cord occlusion and global hypoxia

Nhi Thao Tran et al.

Summary: This study found that direct fetal creatine supplementation increased plasma and cerebral creatine concentrations without affecting fetal physiology pre-UCO. The creatine did not alter fetal responses during UCO or in the early recovery stage, but changes in arterial oxygenation were observed 24-72 hours post UCO. Furthermore, an increase in total creatine levels in certain fetal brain regions, such as the striatum, was detected following acute global hypoxia, suggesting a potential adaptive response to oxygen deprivation.
