Bone resorption and dietary calcium in pregnancy-a window to future maternal bone health

E. C. O'Brien et al.

Summary: Higher bone resorption and low dietary calcium during pregnancy were associated with lower maternal BMD 5 years postpartum. Adequate dietary calcium intake should be advised in the antenatal setting to promote lifelong maternal bone health.

Bone turnover in pregnancy, measured by urinary CTX, is influenced by vitamin D supplementation and is associated with maternal bone health: findings from the Maternal Vitamin D Osteoporosis Study (MAVIDOS) trial

Elizabeth M. Curtis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes of maternal bone resorption marker, urinary CTX, across pregnancy, the impact of gestational vitamin D supplementation, and the associations between CTX and maternal postnatal bone outcomes. The results showed that maternal CTX levels increased through pregnancy, with a lesser degree of increase in the cholecalciferol supplementation group, and higher CTX levels at 34 weeks of gestation were associated with lower maternal bone mass postpartum.
