Orientation anisotropy of quantitative MRI parameters in degenerated human articular cartilage

Nina Elina Hanninen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the orientation dependence of relaxation parameters in cartilage, finding that MRI parameters' orientation anisotropy changes with cartilage degeneration. Samples with advanced osteoarthritis showed more variation in MRI orientation anisotropy compared to less degenerated samples. Understanding the molecular background of relaxation anisotropy could lead to the development of new MRI contrasts and improve the application of established quantitative relaxation contrasts.

Can sodium MRI be used as a method for mapping of cartilage stiffness?

Summary: Although a weak correlation was found between GAG concentration and cartilage stiffness, no correlation was observed between GAG concentration and MRI sodium concentration. MRI sodium concentration was not correlated with apparent peak modulus, but showed a moderate correlation with permeability.
