Dithiophene-Fused Oxadiborepins and Azadiborepins: A New Class of Highly Fluorescent Heteroaromatics

Merian Crumbach et al.

Summary: Access to dithiophene-fused oxadiborepins and the first azadiborepins via a modular synthesis route has been achieved. These new compounds emit intense blue light, some demonstrating fluorescence quantum yields close to unity. The weak aromatic character of the novel 1,2,7-azadiborepin ring was demonstrated through in-depth theoretical investigations using nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) scans and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) calculations.

Synthesis, Properties, and Regioselective Functionalization of 9,9a-BN Anthracene

Dawei Tian et al.

Summary: A novel 9,9a-BN anthracene 5 was synthesized by Ru-catalyzed electrocyclization of BN-aromatic enynes, showing different photophysical properties from all-carbon anthracene and other reported BN-anthracenes. Reactivity of 5 was explored by treatment with organolithium compounds, Br-2, or N-iodosuccinimide, resulting in easily functionalized halogenated compounds via cross-coupling reactions. UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy of 5 were studied to investigate the photophysical properties of these BN-anthracenes.

Modular Synthesis of Pentagonal and Hexagonal Ring-Fused NBN-Phenalenes Leading to an Excited-State Aromatization-Induced Structural Planarization Molecular Library

Cheng-Wei Ju et al.

Summary: In this research, a palladium-catalyzed cyclization/bicyclization strategy was developed for the synthesis of diverse pentagonal and hexagonal ring-fused NBN-phenalenes and half-NBN-phenalenes, which exhibit fluorescence in both solution and solid state. Furthermore, the study revealed the photoinduced structural planarization (PISP) phenomenon in hexagonal ring-fused NBN-pi systems, leading to the formation of excimers, and demonstrated their application in detecting nitro explosives with excellent sensitivity.

Tuning the aggregation behaviour of BN-coronene diimides with imide substituents and their performance in devices (OLEDs and OFETs)

Jonas Hoffmann et al.

Summary: By extending the core with two BN units instead of two CC units, significant bathochromic shifts, higher molar extinction coefficients, and beneficial luminescence properties can be achieved. However, different substitution motifs at the imide position have a substantial impact on aggregation of coronene diimides, resulting in differences in optical properties in the solid state and performance in organic devices.

Parent B2N2-Perylenes with Different BN Orientations

Peng-Fei Zhang et al.

Summary: Introducing BN units into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons expands the chemical space of conjugated materials with novel properties. The study shows that the orientation of BN has significant effects on the structure, (anti)aromaticity, crystal packing, and photophysical properties. These findings provide guidance for the synthesis of BN-PAHs with specific stacking structures.

Jonas Hoffmann et al.

Summary: The study investigates the electronic properties of boron/nitrogen substituted polyaromatic hydrocarbons by tuning their properties through substitution at the B and/or N atoms. BN-PAH analogues showed enhanced absorption/emission properties and luminescence quantum yields compared to all-carbon analogues. The unique donor-acceptor-donor motif based on BN units exhibited interesting electronic behavior and solvent-dependent luminescence properties.

BNB-doped phenalenyls - aromaticity switch upon one-electron reduction

Merian Crumbach et al.

Summary: The synthesis of fully aromatic, luminescent, and highly robust BNB-doped phenalenyls, isoelectronic to the phenalenyl cation, was successfully achieved. B-Fluoromesityl-substitution resulted in fluorescence within a narrow range and a significant increase in reduction potential. Detailed theoretical investigations unveiled an intramolecular aromaticity switch upon one-electron reduction.

One tool to bring them all: Au-catalyzed synthesis of B,O- and B,N-doped PAHs from boronic and borinic acids

Omar Ouadoudi et al.

Summary: The isoelectronic replacement of C=C bonds with B=N+ bonds in PAHs is a common method for preparing novel optoelectronic materials. This study reports the successful modular synthesis of B,N- and 6,0-doped PAHs through [Au(PPh3)NTf2]-catalyzed reactions, using easily accessible starting materials. The approach is also suitable for the synthesis of rare doubly doped PAHs, and the structural and optoelectronic properties of the compounds have been characterized.
