Synthesis of Vinylic Sulfones in Aqueous Media

Summary: A green method has been developed for the sulfination of allenic carbonyl compounds to access a wide variety of vinylic sulfones, which works in aqueous media under very mild conditions. The reaction is atom economic and can provide a moderate to excellent yield of diverse vinylic sulfones with wide functional group tolerance. The efficiency of this method has been demonstrated in reactions where the desired products can be isolated by filtration.

Chiral Selenide-Catalyzed, Highly Regio- and Enantioselective Intermolecular Thioarylation of Alkenes with Phenols

Summary: The enantioselective electrophilic three-component thioarylation of alkenes using chiral selenide catalysis with free phenols as arylating sources has been disclosed. Various chiral phenols were obtained in high regio-, enantio-, and diastereoselectivities. Mechanistic studies showed that the transformation proceeded through carbon nucleophilic attack to give the products rather than the intramolecular rearrangement of phenolic ether intermediates.

Enantioselective Hydrothiolation: Diverging Cyclopropenes through Ligand Control

Summary: In this study, Rh-catalyzed hydrothiolation of cyclopropenes is advanced through divergent reactivity, leading to the formation of cyclopropyl sulfides or allylic sulfides. The choice of bisphosphine ligand determines whether the pathway involves ring-retention or ring-opening, with mechanistic studies revealing the origin of this switchable selectivity. Results indicate a common cyclopropyl-Rh(III) intermediate shared by the two pathways.

Efficient Synthesis of P-Chirogenic Compounds Enabled by Chiral Selenide-Catalyzed Enantioselective Electrophilic Aromatic Halogenation

Summary: This study presents a convenient and efficient method to construct valuable P-chirogenic compounds through chiral selenide-catalyzed enantioselective electrophilic aromatic halogenation. The new chiral bifunctional selenide catalyst successfully converted various bis(2-hydroxyaryl) aryl phosphine oxides into chlorinated and brominated P-chirogenic compounds with good enantioselectivities. By adjusting the catalyst and solvent, the method could also prepare chiral alkyl diaryl phosphine oxides and diaryl phosphinates.

Summary: Chiral organosulfur compounds have wide applications in medicinal chemistry and asymmetric synthesis. The development of methods for their preparation is crucial in organic synthetic chemistry. Enantioselective electrophilic thiolation of alkenes is a straightforward pathway for synthesizing chiral sulfides, and our group has successfully designed and applied chiral bifunctional chalcogenide catalysts for this purpose.
