Patient-Reported Symptom Burden as a Predictor of Emergency Department Use and Unplanned Hospitalization in Head and Neck Cancer: A Longitudinal Population-Based Study

Christopher W. Noel et al.

Summary: This study found a strong association between patient-reported symptom burden and subsequent emergency department use and unplanned hospitalization in head and neck cancer patients. Symptom scores, especially pain, appetite, shortness of breath, and tiredness, were significantly associated with ED/Hosp events. Using ESAS data can help clinicians better detect and manage symptoms in patients.

Incidence of and Factors Associated With Nonfatal Self-injury After a Cancer Diagnosis in Ontario, Canada

Christopher W. Noel et al.

Summary: The study found that cancer patients had a higher incidence of nonfatal self-injury (NFSI) than suicide after diagnosis. Younger age, history of severe psychiatric illness, and prior self-injury were independently associated with risk of NFSI, with these factors synergistically placing young adults with a prior mental health history at the greatest risk. These factors can be used to identify at-risk patients.
