Towards real-time photorealistic 3D holography with deep neural networks

Liang Shi et al.

Summary: The ability to present three-dimensional scenes with continuous depth sensation has a profound impact on various fields. Computer-generated holography enables high-resolution 3D projection, but existing methods have limitations. We demonstrate a deep-learning-based pipeline for real-time 3D hologram synthesis from a single RGB-depth image. Our memory-efficient CNN runs on consumer-grade GPUs and mobile devices, promising real-time performance in future AR/VR headsets.

Broadband cholesteric liquid crystal lens for chromatic aberration correction in catadioptric virtual reality optics

Yannanqi Li et al.

Summary: The designed planar and broadband cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) lens hybridized with a refractive lens forms a catadioptric pancake lens for virtual reality (VR) displays. The chromatic aberration of the assembled pancake lens is dramatically suppressed due to the opposite optical dispersion behaviors, showing great potential for next-generation VR displays.

Enlarging the Eyebox of Maxwellian Displays with a Customized Liquid Crystal Dammann Grating

Ziqian He et al.

Summary: The use of a liquid crystal polymer-based Dammann grating for pupil replication in Maxwellian view displays effectively enlarges the eyebox while maintaining high efficiency and brightness uniformity. The experiment demonstrated successful enlargement of the eyebox and full-color operation. This technology offers a promising route for eyebox expansion in Maxwellian view displays with simple system configuration, compactness, and lightweight.

Aberration-free pupil steerable Maxwellian display for augmented reality with cholesteric liquid crystal holographic lenses

Jianghao Xiong et al.

Summary: Maxwellian displays offer unique features such as always-in-focus quality, high efficiency, and large field-of-view, but their small eyebox presents a major challenge for augmented reality. A promising approach to enlarge the eyebox is pupil steering, and using novel cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) holographic lenses can fundamentally eliminate aberrations in pupil-steerable see-through Maxwellian displays by actively modulating the incident light's polarization state.
