Positive cascading effects of epiphytes enhance the persistence of a habitat-forming macroalga and the biodiversity of the associated invertebrate community under increasing stress

Chiara Ravaglioli et al.

Summary: The presence of epiphyte Jania rubens can reduce light/UV stress for Halopithys incurva, allowing the latter to persist in shallow-water habitats. Positive feedback between H. incurva as the primary habitat-former and J. rubens as the secondary habitat-former generates facilitation cascade, increasing abundance and diversity of associated invertebrates in shallow habitat.
