Assessing threats, regulations, and strategies to abate plastic pollution in LAC beaches during COVID-19 pandemic

Maria B. Alfonso et al.

Summary: Plastic use and production have significantly increased globally over the past 65 years, improving life quality but also generating a substantial amount of plastic waste, especially single-use plastic products. Reports in recent years have highlighted the adverse effects of plastic litter on coastal environments, with Latin America and the Caribbean being particularly vulnerable. The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to further increase the rate of single-use plastic waste generation.

Integrating ecosystem services for the socio-ecological management of ports

Javier Garcia-Onetti et al.

Summary: This study aims to promote a more comprehensive participation of seaport authorities in implementing integrated and ecosystem-based management models in coastal and marine areas to address port environmental pressures. By considering ecosystem services as a connecting element between ecosystems' health and human well-being, it highlights the importance of adapting ecosystem service theories for port authorities to better understand the connection between socio-economic and natural systems.
