Intestinal Epithelial Barrier Maturation by Enteric Glial Cells Is GDNF-Dependent

Michael Meir et al.

Summary: These findings indicate that enteric glial cells (EGCs) maintain intestinal epithelial barrier function (IEB) by synthesizing glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). The protective effects of GDNF on IEB function are mediated through the RET receptor, as shown in experiments using EGC supernatants and GDNF-deficient EGCs.

Enteric Glia Regulate Lymphocyte Activation via Autophagy-Mediated MHC-II Expression

Aaron K. Chow et al.

Summary: Enteric glial cells express MHC-II molecules in response to proinflammatory stimuli, modulating intestinal immune responses by activating T and B lymphocytes, particularly affecting Th17 and regulatory T cell subtypes. Glial autophagy induced by proinflammatory signals plays a key role in antigen presentation and T-lymphocyte subset activation.

High-Fat Diet Induces Disruption of the Tight Junction-Mediated Paracellular Barrier in the Proximal Small Intestine Before the Onset of Type 2 Diabetes and Endotoxemia

J. C. Nascimento et al.

Summary: Disruption of the TJ-mediated paracellular barrier in the duodenum and jejunum is an early event in prediabetes development, occurring without detectable endotoxemia/inflammation, and may contribute to the HF diet-induced increase in intestinal permeability. Despite changes in intestinal permeability and TJ structure, prediabetic mice showed similar levels of LPS, zonulin, and TNF-alpha compared to controls in plasma, adipose tissue, and intestinal segments.
