Summary: A series of well-defined ABA-triblock copolymers were synthesized by living ring-opening metathesis polymerization, leading to the subsequent formation of amphiphilic ABA-triblock azobenzene copolymers with light-responsive behavior and self-assembly capability. The reversible structural changes of the copolymers under alternating UV and visible light illumination were demonstrated.

Advances in Application of Azobenzene as a Trigger in Biomedicine: Molecular Design and Spontaneous Assembly

Summary: Azobenzene, a well-known derivative of stimulus-responsive molecular switches, has shown superior performance in biomedical applications. Recent studies have focused on developing long-wavelength-responsive azobenzene, matching its characteristics to the bio-optical window for larger and more effective stimulus response. The use of azobenzene as a hypoxia-sensitive connector has also resulted in on/off state switching of properties such as pharmacology and fluorescence activity. Here, we summarize recent advances in utilizing azobenzene as a trigger in biomedicine.

Branched Aggregates with Tunable Morphology via Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Azobenzene-Derived Molecular Double Brushes

Summary: Hierarchical self-assembly of molecular double brushes (MDBs) can lead to nature-inspired materials with subtle nanostructures, utilizing the chain-end reactivity of asymmetric tapered worm (ATW) nanostructures and azobenzene moieties that undergo trans-cis isomerization upon UV irradiation. The resulting multiscale supermicelles exhibit starfish shapes resembling biological specimens, with differing central body and arm morphologies, achieved by manipulating irradiation time.

A multi-responsive organogel and colloid based on the self-assembly of a Ag(i)-azopyridine coordination polymer

Summary: In this study, coordination polymers with azo groups on the main chain were prepared through the coordination of C-3 symmetric azopyridine ligands and Ag(i). The trans coordination polymer exhibited self-healing and multi-stimuli response, forming an organogel, while the cis coordination polymer assembled into responsive nanoparticles that can produce fibrous precipitation under light irradiation.
